A New York school district has started a pilot program to install vape detectors in some bathrooms.

The detectors will be placed in schools in White Plains. They work like smoke detectors and will allow school officials to know if anyone is caught vaping.

The pilot program comes after the New York state Health Department revealed that 40% of seniors and 27% of all high school students in the state use electronic cigarettes.

School leaders say they support a ban on all vaping products because they don't believe it’s safe for students or the community at large. Several other school districts in the Hudson Valley also have the pilot program in place.

This comes as New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced the formation of a task force to look into vaping in the Garden State. Some New Jersey leaders have said that they are in favor of banning e-cigarettes altogether in New Jersey.

New Jersey lawmakers and even President Donald Trump have proposed a ban on flavored vape products.

At least six people have died due to a lung disease caused by vaping, according to health officials.
