Pigeons trapped on Bayonne bridge after installation of bird-deterrent netting

A group of pigeons has become trapped behind newly installed bird-deterrent netting on a Bayonne bridge, prompting an ongoing effort to free them, city officials said Tuesday.
The netting was recently installed on a bridge at Eighth Street and Broadway to address the accumulation of bird feces beneath the structure.
City officials said the buildup had become an ongoing public health concern.
The Department of Public Works had regularly cleaned the areas, but the city said those efforts did not provide a lasting solution.
Some pigeons continued to roost in the structural eaves as installation of the netting was being completed, leaving the birds trapped inside, according to the city.
Before the netting was closed, traps containing food and water were placed inside the structure as part of an effort to capture and release the birds.
The city’s vendor returned Monday night to release any captured pigeons and is scheduled to return every 48 hours until all the birds have been freed, according to the city.
