The price for a ride on a PATH train is going up by 25 cents this Sunday. Starting Jan. 12, the price of a one-way trip will be an even $3, up from $2.75.

Seniors will get a discount and pay $1.50. And those buying a multi-trip pass will feel only a 10-cent increase.

Commuters tell News 12 that using the PATH to get to work in New York City is vital.

Mark Malinsky and his son Daniel are from Westfield. They say they regularly use the PATH to get to Manhattan.

“Hopefully, the trains will be less delayed and maybe it’ll be better,” said Daniel Malinsky. “For me, the priority is the trains being on time, more than anything.”

Another rider heading into the Hoboken station told News 12 New Jersey, “This is the New York City metropolitan area. They’ve been hiking [prices] here since I was born.”

This is the first PATH fare increase since 2014. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the increase is needed for a few reasons.

One is due to inflation. Another is to make up the $3 billion loss the agency suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic when people stopped commuting and worked from home. A third reason is capital improvements.

Some of these improvements will start at midnight on Jan. 30 in Hoboken, and the Hoboken station will be closed for nearly a month.

The Port Authority has decided that this station will get major renovations, which include new stairways, flooring, wall tiling and lighting. There will also be new train cars, signals and 4,500 feet of new track. It’s part of a $430 million plan to overhaul the 116-year-old PATH system.
