Paterson residents now have more space to enjoy the outdoors following the reopening of Westside Park after a $14 million renovation.
The 26.6-acre park features a multipurpose field, playground, tennis and basketball courts, tree-lined walking paths, new lighting and benches. City officials say the upgrades will give families and residents of all ages greater access to recreation and outdoor activities in their neighborhood.
Originally developed in the 1890s, Westside Park was once known for its gardens, walking paths, monuments and boat launches along the Passaic River. Over time, its facilities deteriorated, prompting residents and community advocates to push for its restoration.
The renovation was shaped by community input and a partnership between the City of Paterson, New City Parks and the New Jersey Community Development Corporation. The project received support from state and federal programs, as well as private foundations.
City officials say the investment is part of a broader effort to revitalize parks across Paterson and create welcoming public spaces that support community connections and residents’ well-being.
The reopening was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 20.
