A record number of gun were confiscated in Paterson in September as part of the police department's gun suppression program.
Paterson police confiscated 24 guns just in September. Mayor Andre Sayegh said police have not confiscated that many guns in one month since 2022.
The mayor told News 12 that every gun taken off the street is one less that can be used to commit a violent crime.
"There's an epidemic of firearms as far as I'm concerned, but our gun suppression program…We're taking hundreds of guns every year off of our streets," he said.
The program focuses on staffing areas that have high rates of violent crime with extra patrols, according to the mayor.
Police also rely on the community to report suspicious activity by using the Paterson Plus app or reaching out to local precincts.
