A 54-year-old Paterson man has been charged with illegally voting in the 2022 general election and making false statements while applying for U.S. citizenship, federal prosecutors announced.
Antonio Mitchell, a Jamaican national and lawful permanent resident, faces charges of voting as a noncitizen in a federal election, unlawfully attempting to obtain naturalization and making false statements in connection with the naturalization process, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for New Jersey.
According to a federal criminal complaint, Mitchell registered to vote in New Jersey in September 2012 by submitting an application falsely stating that he was a U.S. citizen.
Prosecutors allege Mitchell subsequently voted in person in the Nov. 8, 2022, general election, which included races for the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mitchell applied for naturalization in January 2025 and indicated on his application that he had never registered to vote or voted in a federal, state or local election, according to the complaint.
Federal authorities allege Mitchell maintained that answer during a September 2025 immigration interview. During another interview in March 2026, he allegedly denied ever registering to vote or casting a ballot in the United States.
Mitchell made his initial appearance in federal court on Oct. 28, according to prosecutors.
