Because of this heat wave, the city of Paterson is under a state of emergency. All recreational events are cancelled until further notice.
Mayor Andre Sayegh declared the state of emergency after multiple people passed out because of the heat or had to be treated for heat-related injuries at a high school graduation.
Fifty people, including students and spectators needed treatment, nine were taken to the hospital.
Hinchcliffe Stadium was hosting simultaneous graduations for five high schools.
JFK High School students and their relatives who suffered from heat exhaustion were removed and taken to a make-shift cooling center before being taken to the hospital.
"It was exhausting I couldn't breathe like my chest hurts," said Ciarra Bailey of Rosa Park High School. "There were people fainting around us," said Emmanuel Avila Burnett. Cooling centers are open at Paterson Free Public Libraries from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and water will be available at Paterson Main Public Library and Northside Public Library.
