Route 23 has reopened between Montclair Avenue in Cedar Grove and Main Street in Little Falls following a water main break.
Little Falls police blocked off about a mile long stretch Tuesday at 7 p.m. anticipating New Jersey American Water work until 12 p.m. Wednesday. But watermain break repairs lasted through early Thursday morning.
New Jersey American Water says they discovered a leak on a 6-inch water main that was located under two large diameter storm sewer mains that run parallel on Route 23. They then decided to replace a portion of the main to reduce the potential risk of any future main breaks at the location.
Many businesses along this busy stretch of Newark Pompton Turnpike need to make up for a day of lost sales.
The owner of Munchy's says he had about the half the sales he usually does. Rhonda Mallek, the owner of The Fine Grind, said they had much lower business than a typical Wednesday.
The manager at the Dunkin Donuts told News 12 they usually see 400 customers a day. Wednesday, they only had 152 and the majority of them mobile orders. The manger said 75% of customers ended up cancelling their orders and asking for a refund because they couldn't get there.
