A high rate of suspensions is forcing the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District to bring back an old form of punishment.
The district cut Saturday detention in 2006 to balance its budget. However, district officials say they have to bring back the unpopular disciplinary program due to a spike in suspensions. School officials say Saturday detention will not only discipline students, but it will also ensure students won?t miss classes due to suspensions.
Many students say they are not looking forward to the possibility of giving up their freedom on Saturdays. The Parsippany Board of Education will draw up a preliminary budget for Saturday detention next week. Taxpayers will vote to fund the program in April. If it passes, Saturday detention will take effect in the fall.
