As parents begin their holiday shopping this year, they should check out the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group?s (NJ PIRG) annual list of toys to avoid.
NJ PIRG released the list Tuesday just days before the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday. On this year?s list, choking hazards and overly loud toys are number one concerns. NJ PIRG officials say toys with magnets are also a concern if children swallow more than one magnet. According to NJ PIRG officials, if a child swallows more than one magnet they can cause tears in the digestive system.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voluntarily recalled almost 2.5 million Mattel Polly Pocket sets this week for a magnet problem. NJ PIRG officials say like the Polly Pocket sets, many toys are voluntarily recalled each year, but stores aren?t required to pull them off the shelves. According to NJ PIRG, stores must put up a notice about the recalled toy. However, NJ PIRG officials urge all parents to check each toy and product recall to ensure a safe holiday.
