The parents of a Newark high school cheerleader seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash are moving forward with a civil lawsuit against the Newark Board of Education and others.
Chiara Jones was a cheerleader at Newark Arts High School. She was stepping off the school bus after returning from a cheer competition when she was allegedly struck by Mia’Jah Burton, whom police say drove off.
Jones suffered a traumatic brain injury.
The law firm representing the Jones family issued a statement on Monday.
“The decision to proceed with litigation comes after the firm has substantiated additional pertinent facts related to the tragic evening with disturbing new video evidence in their possession,” the statement read in part.
Burton was eventually arrested and now faces serious criminal charges. She was also named in the lawsuit.
