An electric bicycle caught fire on the front porch of a two-family home in Summit on Monday evening, prompting a response from firefighters and emergency medical personnel, officials said.
The Summit Fire Department was called to the Broad Street home around 6:30 p.m. after neighbors across the street reported seeing an explosion on the porch, followed by flames and smoke that appeared to be spreading inside.
Firefighters arrived three minutes later and brought the fire under control around 7 p.m.
The fire caused minor damage to the porch but did not spread to other areas of the home, officials said.
Two occupants were evaluated for injuries by the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad but declined additional medical attention.
Union County Hazmat responded to dispose of the e-bike and its battery. Fire departments from Millburn and Springfield also assisted at the scene.
"Thankfully, our crews arrived in time to get the fire under control before it could spread to the rest of the home," Summit Fire Chief Brian Harnois said.
Harnois urged residents to use manufacturer-approved chargers and batteries and properly dispose of lithium-ion battery-powered devices when they are no longer in use.
