An overnight house fire killed an Irvington man who was trapped on the third floor of the home.
The fire broke out around 11 p.m. Monday inside a home on 40th Street. Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that the victim was heard screaming for help, but firefighters were not able to rescue him in time.
"It was really sad, but we couldn't do anything because the flames were so bad," says neighbor Byron Barryates.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says that four other adults were able to escape the fire and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The victim is believed to be in his 60s. Officials say that his body was burned so badly that they could not immediately identify him.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
