Ordering in? Keep those extra fees in check when using food delivery apps

118ds agoIndoor dining limits due to COVID-19 restrictions have pushed more people to rely on food delivery apps when not preparing meals at home, but those apps can come with hidden costs.
Consumer Reports researched popular food delivery apps - including Door Dash, Grubhub, Postmates and Uber Eats - and found that the services can mark up the cost of food by as much as 47 to 52 percent.
Stephanie Nguyen, of Consumer Reports, says food delivery services often use vague language, such as terms like service fees or delivery fees, which keep customers unclear what they’re paying for.
"Because of COVID there's been a rise in fees in in multiple different arenas,” says Nguyen.
In some places, such as New York City and Jersey City, lawmakers have put caps on delivery fees of 15% or 20%. But if you live somewhere without those limits, it’s up to you to do the research and figure out how much you’re willing to pay for the convenience of having food delivered.
