A South Plainfield man accused of killing his grandparents and uncle was the one who called 911 to report the crime, according to an affidavit.
Om Brahmbhatt, 23, is accused of killing his grandparents, 72-year-old Dilipkumar Brahmbhatt and 72-year-old Bindu Brahmbhatt, as well as his uncle, 38-year-old Yashkumar Brahmbhatt, while they slept in their Coppola Drive townhome Monday morning.
"This is very unfortunate. We are very sorry for the family for the losses," says Nirav Patel, who lives in the same apartment complex as the victims.
According to the affidavit, Om Brahmbhatt shot his grandparents in the head with a gun he purchased online. He then allegedly shot his uncle multiple times. The document states that Om Brahmbhatt then called 911 to report the shooting.
Om Brahmbhatt told the arriving officers that he lived in the house and that “it might be me” referring to the shooter, according to the affidavit.
"Neighbors who stay upstairs, they heard fights a few times and called the cops one time," says Sheetla Singeh, who also lives in the complex.
Om Brahmbhatt was taken into custody and charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
He is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Facility and is expected to appear in court on either Friday or next Tuesday.
