A Cape May County teacher is accused of sexually abusing a student for several years, which resulted in her giving birth to his child.
The county prosecutor’s office says that from 2016 until 2020, 34-year-old Laura Caron engaged in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a minor who had been living in her home. The abuse allegedly began when the victim was 11 years old, according to officials.
According to court documents, the superintendent of Cape May County schools received a tip back in December after a Facebook post from the victim's father claimed Caron's 5-year-old child looked similar to himself and to his son.
Investigators say the victim's parents became friends with Caron, a teacher in Middle Township, allowing their two sons and daughter to stay at her house.
Police interviewed the victim, who allegedly confirmed having a sexual relationship with his teacher, and that he is the father of her child. The victim also says he was in contact with the teacher until his father made the Facebook post last month.
Caron was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. She is being held at the Cape May County Correctional Center.
If convicted, she could face 20 years in prison.
