Officials: Middle school student injured by knife brought in by another student
Officials say that an incident at a Union County middle school left one student with minor injuries and another student facing disciplinary action.
A spokesperson for the Linden Police Department says that the incident was between two 13-year-old boys at the Joseph E. Soehl Middle School. One of the boys allegedly had a knife and jabbed it at the other student. That student sustained a minor cut to his hand.
It was originally reported to be an altercation between the two students. But school officials now say that the boys were just playing in the hallway.
“While running, the one student was nicked in the palm of his hand by the knife when the other student jabbed it toward him,” interim Superintendent Denise Cleary said in a letter to parents.
Cleary says that the students walked into class together and reported the injury as a pencil stab. But Cleary says that the teacher eventually found out about the knife and took it from the boy and brought him to the principal’s office.
“We have zero tolerance for any type of weapon in school and the police were contacted regarding this incident,” Cleary said.
The incident is under investigation by the Linden Police Juvenile Aid Bureau.
