Officials: Man and woman severely burned escaping Cliffside Park house fire

The fire started just after 6 p.m. Monday on Lawton Avenue and Abbot Boulevard.

A man and a woman are in the hospital being treated for severe burns they sustained while escaping a multifamily house fire in Cliffside Park, according to the authorities.

The fire started just after 6 p.m. Monday on Lawton Avenue and Abbot Boulevard. Flames and heavy smoke could be seen coming from the upper floors of the building.

The American Red Cross says that 25 people from 10 families were displaced.

Firefighters remained on the scene through the night and into Tuesday morning to put out hotspots.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
