Officials say a 65-year-old man who was hospitalized in New Jersey earlier this month had West Nile virus.

Officials say the man had been admitted to a Camden County hospital on Sept. 12 after experiencing symptoms similar to those of the mosquito-borne infection. He was transferred to a Pennsylvania hospital the following week.

Government officials on Tuesday confirmed he had West Nile.

The county Mosquito Commission regularly checks thousands of suspected mosquito-breeding sites. Mosquito spraying is scheduled on an as-needed basis based on the results of surveillance efforts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says mosquitoes can become infected when they feed on infected birds.

Symptoms include fever, headache, drowsiness, nausea, and a rash.
