The Middlesex County Office of Health Services is reporting a bat tested positive for rabies in South Plainfield.
The incident happened last month in the vicinity of Front Street and Maple Avenue.
Animal control officers responded to a resident's home, where the bat was found in a bedroom.
The animal was captured and taken to the New Jersey Department of Health, where it tested positive for rabies.
Officials are asking anyone who may have been affected to get checked out.
The incident is the fifth rabid animal reported in Middlesex County this year, and the first in South Plainfield.
