The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife says that 28 black bears were killed Thursday on the fourth day of the state’s black bear hunt.

Of the bears killed, four of them were tagged, according to state officials. The division says that 151 bears have been killed cumulatively during this year’s hunt; 13 of those bears had state tags.

Thursday was the first day that allowed hunters to use bows and muzzle-loading firearms. The first three days of the six-day hunt only allowed hunting with bows.

Wildlife officials say that the hunts help control the black bear population and minimize run-ins with humans.

But opponents say that the hunts are inhumane and unnecessary.
