A gas leak and explosion in Perth Amboy left one person injured and forced others out of their homes.

Fire teams responded to a juice bar at 232 Hall Ave. around 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

One person happened to be walking by at the time of the explosion and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to the Perth Amboy Fire Department.

The explosion was strong enough to cause a fire within the juice bar on the first floor of the three-story building.

"The front windows got blown out and some damage to some structural walls inside the stairs,” said Perth Amboy Fire Chief Ed Mullen.

An active natural gas leak temporarily evacuated the area while the gas main was secured. Some residents living above the business had to relocate.

"If you smell, see or hear gas, make sure you call 911 right away so the fire department can get here as quick as can be,” said Mullen. “Because sometimes gas leaks could end up in an explosion which is what we believe happened here.”

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.
