The Piscataway teen charged in the death of his popular police office father pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday.
Police believe Jerry Mahoney was fatally shot by his 19-year-old son, John, at their home on Gibson Street Thursday. According to investigators, the teen then shot himself in the arm to create the appearance of a home invasion.
"Clearly, I think he snapped," said the suspect's cousin outside of court.
Mahoney was treated and released from the hospital and is being held on $800,000 bail. Police have not revealed a possible motive for the murder. Friends and relatives are also seeking answers.
"He was a very respectful, great man ? it just sickens me that he's dead," said Brad Pironciak, John Mahoney's friend.
Jerry Mahoney was a member of the police force for more than 20 years and was also the vice president of the school board in Piscataway.
