The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a shooting involving an off-duty Newark police officer and two alleged carjackers.
A police source tells News 12 New Jersey that the officer was leaving with his wife and child early Monday morning on North 13th Street. The officer went back to the home to get something and that's when the two suspects allegedly smashed the car's windows. The wife and child were inside the car when it happened.
The officer came outside and opened fire on the men, who fled.
Newark police say the suspects' getaway vehicle has been found. It is believed to be a stolen vehicle.
Anyone with any information about the suspects is urged to call Newark police.
