An unusual smell reported across Hoboken is being traced back to environmental work at a former gas station site.

City officials say multiple complaints have come in about a strong odor coming from the former Sunoco property at 13th Street and Willow Avenue.

Authorities say the smell is connected to ongoing cleanup and preparation work as the site is readied for redevelopment.

While the odor may be noticeable and unpleasant, officials stress that the material causing it is not hazardous.

City leaders say they are working closely with the property owner, environmental experts and state regulators to monitor the situation. They add that efforts are underway to minimize the impact on nearby neighborhoods.
