The first phase of development for new Netflix studios in Monmouth County has been approved. The Borough of Oceanport unanimously voted to construct four out of 12 soundstages in Fort Monmouth. The production studios will replace the 289-acre former army base.
A Netflix spokesperson told News 12, "While we still have a lot of work ahead, we are excited to continue partnering with local officials and the community to transform this historic space into a world-class production facility."
"They're looking to complete the entire project within four years and be fully up and running,” said Oceanport Mayor Thomas Tvrdik.
Construction is expected to start around this time next year, after the demolition of 88 buildings between Oceanport and Eatontown. The demolition is expected to happen at the end of 2025.
Tvrdik explained that it would be "Former military buildings, not housing. More warehousing, all different types." He says Netflix will be able to film eight different series at the same time with this facility.
Some residents say they have been concerned about traffic and noise with the new facility. But according to the mayor, "The sound stages are not 100% soundproof but will be contained because they have to control the volume."
Tvrdik says he believes the production studios will do more good than harm and says the total project should create up to 3,000 jobs for the area, driving economic growth.
"They have been answering the residents and working with the residents, so all in all, I think most folks are really excited that this is coming right to our little community,” he said.
Gov. Phil Murphy commented about the approval, writing, "Netflix’s substantial direct investment will stimulate job creation and spark an entirely new ecosystem of housing, hotels, and ancillary businesses and services, bringing with it countless additional jobs and boosting the regional economy.”
