President-elect Barack Obama called on Americans Monday to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King by making a commitment to serve others.
On the eve of his inauguration, Obama issued a statement saying King's life was lived in loving service to others.
Monday is the federal holiday commemorating the birthday ofKing, and Obama is leading a day of community service in remembrance.
"As we honor that legacy, it's not a day just to pause andreflect, it's a day to act," says Obama. "I ask the Americanpeople to turn today's efforts into an ongoing commitment toenriching the lives of others in their communities, their citiesand their country."
