Two NYPD officers were shot in Queens while investigating a domestic violence report, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said Tuesday.
Authorities say the officers were investigating the domestic violence report at a home when a man, identified as 41-year-old Rondall Goppy, started shooting at them a little before 1 p.m.
Shea said a woman who lives at Goppy's home went to the police station on Tuesday to report a domestic violence incident that happened on Monday night.
The officers, identified as 36-year-old Christopher Wells and 33-year-old Joseph Murphy, accompanied the woman back to the home and were there for about six minutes when Goppy came and started firing, Shea said.
News 12 is told the officers fired back, striking and killing Goppy on scene.
"Sometimes in a college classroom, or a conference room, or a zoom meeting talking about policing, it seems real easy to say here's the script and here's what we'll do. What we see here today and what police officers surrounding us see all the time, there is no script,” said Pat Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association.
Police say two firearms were recovered from the scene.
Officials say one of the officers was shot in the upper thigh, while the other was hit in both hands. Both officers were undergoing surgery and are expected to be OK.
