NYPD: Officer attacked, suspect shot and arrested in Coney Island

A Brooklyn man has been charged and arrested after police say he used a knife to slash the hand of an NYPD officer during a chaotic encounter Thursday afternoon.
According to the NYPD, an officer was slashed in the hand and the suspect responsible was shot in his leg and shoulder between Neptune Avenue and Surf Avenue just before 1 p.m. Both are in stable condition and the suspect has since been arrested and charged.
Just steps away from the 60th Precinct, one 16-inch knife was marked as evidence. Police say the man the weapon belonged to was approached by officers Thursday afternoon on West 8th Street in Coney Island after flashing knives and blocking traffic. According to reports, chaos erupted after one officer approached the suspect to investigate. Other NYPD members approached the pair and a struggle ensued.
After refusing to drop his weapons, one police officer fired shots striking the suspect in his leg and shoulder. Police say the man then used one of his knives to slash an officer in his hand.
Officials say the suspect, Richard Paris, 57, is in stable condition and is now facing multiple criminal charges including assault on a police officer.
The six-year veteran on the force was treated for his wound at a hospital. Other members of the NYPD along with Mayor Eric Adams and Commissioner Keechant Sewell applauded the officer as he was escorted out of the hospital.
