City Council members are urging the Department of Transportation to consider a revision of several areas along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to make them more environmentally friendly for Brooklyn neighborhoods.

The Cantilever section of the BQE is known to commuters for heavy traffic. To the city, it's a portion that needs significant repairs because of its crumbling infrastructure along with other BQE sections.

The call comes after President Joe Biden's passing of the bipartisan infrastructure bill. City Council members see this as an opportunity to call on the DOT to make other areas of the BQE that run through northern and southern Brooklyn more environmentally friendly.

Several council members banded together to send Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the U.S. Department of Transportation to maintain two lanes of traffic on the BQE in each direction, opposed to six lanes of traffic.

Council members also say the community is welcome to weigh in on the conversation.
