The 35th Annual Fleet Week, a seven-day celebration honoring the U.S. Navy, the Coast Guard and the Marine Corps., began today in New York City.
Nearly 2,400 military personnel will participate in Fleet Week running until May 30. The first official Fleet Week took place in 1988 and usually happens around the same time as Memorial Day weekend.
During that time, neighbors can visit Navy ships at several venues throughout the week including Pier 88 north and south in Manhattan, and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum.
There will be a parade of ships along the Hudson River starting at Battery Park and running the George Washington Bridge starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
At Fort Hamilton, a cannon salute will take place welcoming the fleet of ships to New York City.
