A tornado that touched down in Jackson Township on Saturday has been rated as an EF-2 tornado with peak winds of 130 mph.
This tornado was one of at least six that caused wanton destruction around the Garden State.
Adventure Crossing in Jackson sustained major damage and appeared to be flattened. It opened just over two months ago.
Other businesses impacted were Glory’s Market. Jeremy Coplan, 23, was working during the storm.
"The lights were flickering. Looking like the poltergeist and boom the lights just go out,” Coplan says.
The business did not sustain damage but did lose power for nearly a day. The business is still catching up from the disruptions.
"I'm not afraid of a lot of things except natural disasters, tornadoes, and tsunamis. I was like, ‘I don't know what to do, man. I think I'm gonna die,’” Coplan says.
Damage stretched to locations throughout the Garden State. The National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt saw extensive damage at buildings dedicated to the Youth Challenge Academy.
"I was just praying that all my kids and my staff were safe,” says Earnest Williams, director of the academy.
The dorm rooms of the military leadership school were not damaged, but a building housing equipment was destroyed.
"It was a miracle that no one was hurt or injured. We are just thankful that we are still here,” says Williams.
