If you're planning to attend a FIFA World Cup match at MetLife Stadium, getting there may take more planning than a typical game day.
During FIFA matches, fans will not be allowed to park personal vehicles at the stadium — meaning thousands of visitors will need to rely on alternate transportation options to get to and from the venue.
With traffic expected to surge during the FIFA World Cup, transportation officials are rolling out several ways for fans to get to MetLife Stadium — including a major price cut for one shuttle service. The Official New York New Jersey Stadium Shuttle is now dropping its roundtrip fare from $80 to $20.
The shuttle departs from the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine Park and Ride along Route 3 near Clifton and takes fans directly to the stadium complex. Officials say the shuttle is just one part of a larger transportation plan for the World Cup. Fans can also use NJ Transit trains, rideshare services, limited parking at American Dream, or designated drop-off areas near the pedestrian bridge leading to the stadium.
Transportation officials say the plan is designed to help ease congestion while also tracking how many people are entering and leaving the area during matches.
Booking a shuttle ride for games, starts online, where fans choose their match date, number of shuttle tickets and whether they plan to park at the Clifton lot. Riders must also have valid match tickets in order to board.
While News 12 was not able to ride the shuttle itself, our crew drove the same 5.7-mile route from the Clifton park-and-ride to MetLife Stadium to get a sense of the commute fans can expect.
Under normal traffic conditions, the drive takes about 10 minutes along Route 3 — though officials expect travel times to increase significantly on match days.
With no general parking is available during FIFA matches, transportation experts say fans should begin making plans well in advance because getting to MetLife Stadium during the World Cup will look very different than a standard football game day.
