No charges to be filed against driver in deadly Planet Fitness crash

The name of the man who died is being withheld from the public at the request of the family.

The driver involved in a deadly crash at a Planet Fitness gym in Elizabeth will not face any charges, according to the city police.

Elizabeth police officials say a 69-year-old woman drove her Jeep through the front window of the gym on Tuesday afternoon. A 72-year-old man was killed and a man in his 50s who was using a treadmill was hurt. Police say the driver of the Jeep was also injured in the crash.

Police say the injured individuals have been released from the hospital.

The name of the man who died is being withheld from the public at the request of the family.

Planet Fitness issued a statement about the incident, which read in part, "... the safety of our employees, members, and guests is a top priority, and we are extremely saddened by this tragic accident and loss of life. Our thoughts are with the member's family and those impacted during this difficult time..."

The gym was closed on Wednesday. There is no word on when it would reopen.
