A man was killed and other people were injured when a Jeep crashed into a Planet Fitness gym in Elizabeth, according to police.
The crash happened around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday on Newark Avenue.
Police say a 69-year-old woman crashed through the gym, fatally injuring a 72-year-old man who was standing near the front window. They say that a 59-year-old man who was on the treadmill at the time of the crash sustained cuts and abrasions. The driver was also injured when the airbag deployed, according to police.
A large crowd of gym members gathered soon after the crash. Some had arrived after the crash, expecting to work out, only to find the gym damaged.
“I was totally shocked. Very in shock, because it would have been me over there,” says gym member Kevin.
“It’s shocking that something like this could happen,” says Andre Harden, of Elizabeth. “If I find out [who died,] I won’t be surprised if I’ve seen him before. It’s just a tragedy.”
Crews towed the Jeep out of the building just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, and the building was boarded up.
Several area residents said the parking lot is known for drivers speeding through the area. They say it is often used as a shortcut surrounding the busy roadway, including Newark Avenue.
Police didn’t provide any information about how fast the driver was going when she crashed into the building.
“Right where the car went through is handicap spots, and usually when I come there are cars parked there, so obviously there was no one there and something happened,” said Frank McClain, of Elizabeth. “You know, hopefully the [driver] is all right, too, but I heard they were hurt. too.”
Marvin Gonzalez, a gym member, said he helped the 69-year-old driver out of her Jeep when her door was stuck moments after the fatal crash happened. He said he hasn’t been able to eat anything since the fatal crash and his mind has been racing. He heard people screaming inside the gym.
The gym windows that were shattered were boarded up on Tuesday night and closed until further notice.
