New Jersey is full of highways, and some are a smoother drive than others. News 12 ran a poll in August asking followers their least favorite roads to drive in New Jersey.
Coming in at No. 3 - Interstate 287.
The results didn’t surprise I-287 regulars in Morristown.
One commenter called I-287 “the worst in the country” from all the congestion.
“It is a constant stop-and-go,” said MacKenzie, of Hackettstown. “You're bound to get rear-ended at some point on that commute.”
“If you do leave space, people tend to cut you off,” said Cory Barfuss, of Boonton Township.
It’s not just Morris County. The Middlesex County southbound portion near Edison becomes a parking lot every morning and every night. It’s also a connector to several other high-traffic roads.
There are also infrastructure concerns. Further north between Oakland and Montville, the road repeatedly buckled from excessive heat during the peak of summer. The DOT evaluated a 10-mile stretch of that road that is set to be replaced in the near future.
I-287 continues through New York, including the Mario Cuomo Bridge, and ends just shy of the Connecticut border. There are only tolls when crossing into the Empire State, but according to News 12 viewers, there are still mental tolls that commuters pay daily.
