All lanes are closed on Interstate 80 in Wharton after a new sinkhole developed close to where crews were working to repair existing sinkholes on the highway.
All lanes are detoured at Exit 34 to Route 15 Northbound.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation says that a 15 x 15-foot hole opened in the median while crews were drilling.
“Out of an abundance of caution, NJDOT closed and detoured all lanes on I-80 westbound…We are in the process of evaluating the situation,” a spokesperson for the DOT stated.
The eastbound lanes have been closed for more than a month while crews were making repairs on the highway.
Sinkholes have been an issue on this stretch of roadway for several months. The first sinkhole developed in December, while another developed in February.
Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency related to the issues, which is needed to get federal funds for repairs.
Commutes and business owners have been telling News 12 New Jersey that the continued closures have been impactful on their daily lives.
Police say they are not sure when the westbound lanes will reopen.
State Assemblywoman Aura Dunn has been working to get funding for emergency repairs.
"It’s a major, major inconvenience. But I'm so glad that this project has been ongoing with safety as the top priority and people have remained safe," she says.
NJDOT officials say they're monitoring the situation and plan to meet on Thursday to discuss the next course of action.
