Applicants at the State Police Academy in Sea Girt today tried to prove that they are physically capable of being a state trooper.
While nearly 8,500 applicants completed their physical qualification tests, only 250 men and women will get the open positions.
The pool of minority applicants grew from last year after the attorney general's office was criticized for only graduating two African-Americans.
Many positions are open due to recent retirements, and the state will have two graduating classes next year in an effort to produce twice as many troopers.
Candidates must still take a written exam this fall and undergo a background check.
