Gov. Mikie Sherrill says NJ Transit riders will begin seeing changes as part of an effort to improve the customer experience on trains and buses.
The improvements begin with an updated NJ Transit app that works based on a rider’s location. Officials say the app will eventually feature real-time GPS tracking for trains and buses so riders can see where their ride is instead of relying on outdated updates.
The GPS trackers are expected to take several months.
Sherrill also said more than 250 new buses and 40 new rail cars will be added to the fleet by the end of the year, with a complete overhaul planned over the next five years.
Newark Penn Station will be modernized with new walkways and elevators to platforms. All 165 NJ Transit stations will also be reviewed to determine what repairs are needed.
Sherrill said riders will see immediate changes.
“But what we can do immediately is step up our cleaning of trains, buses and stations so vehicles and waiting areas look as good as new, establish a real-time crime center that monitors stations for security risks so you feel safe on the platforms at all service hours,” Sherrill said.
Sherrill also said the improvements will not lead to fare increases this year.
