A 10-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a New Jersey Transit bus while riding his bicycle.
The Bergenfield Police Department says that it happened Monday afternoon at the intersection of West Church Street and Veterans Plaza. The boy, identified as Alvin Maracalho, was riding his bike through the crosswalk of the intersection at the same time the bus was making a left turn, according to police. The bus hit the boy as he was crossing.
Police say that the boy was conscious immediately after the impact and while being loaded on to the ambulance. But he died from his injuries later at Hackensack University Medical Center.
The bus driver, identified as 58-year-old Cynthia Watkins, remained on the scene. NJ Transit officials say that she has a clean driving record. Witnesses say that Watkins was distraught after the crash.
“She was just in shock. She was crying,” says witness Liela Binos.
The boy’s family has asked for privacy following the incident. Maracalho was a student at Hoover Elementary School.
School Superintendent Christopher Tully said in a statement, "Our entire community is saddened to learn of this tragic loss of life. We offer our condolences to the Maracalho family. We are providing counselors to our students and staff for as long as needed."
Bergenfield police also offered their condolences.
NJ Transit officials say that Watkins will not be able to drive until the investigation into the crash is complete.
