Questions mount as a top Trump official says federal aid - including SNAP food benefits - could stop coming to Democrat-run states across the nation.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said Tuesday that the federal government would halt SNAP funding to 21 Democrat-run states that didn’t supply data as the government aims to reduce fraud in that program.
It is unclear right now if New Jersey is on the list, but top state Democrats are already pushing back.
“Everybody is against fraud,” said Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ 5). “But what everybody should also be against, is doing anything to get in the way of ensuring that hungry families and children can get a meal on their table.”
U.S. Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) called the move “a crusade to snatch food away from families in need.”
This comes on the heels of a difficult November, when the government shutdown and several lawsuits left food stamps in limbo. Food pantries saw heavy demand in a state where one in 11 residents are SNAP-eligible.
The Department of Agriculture is asking for data - including SNAP recipients’ names and immigration status - to reduce fraud. New Jersey is one of the states that sued the department and Secretary Rollins over this.
Attorney General Matt Platkin (D) released a statement to News 12 calling it “illegal and deeply immoral” - and that the state will watch the next steps closely.
Secretary Rollins says some SNAP recipients are getting benefits from multiple states, and other active recipients are actually deceased. The federal government has asked the states to send the information by Dec. 8.
