A new poll shows a majority of New Jersey residents are in favor of the gas tax amendment.
The Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll out Monday also shows a slight majority supports a proposed constitutional amendment to dedicate gas taxes to the state's transportation trust fund.
The poll found 51 percent of registered voters surveyed support the gas tax amendment, while 34 percent are opposed. That's virtually unchanged from a poll taken in January.
The telephone poll of 712 registered voters conducted from June 22-26 has a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.
The poll comes as the transportation trust fund is dangerously low on money.
Gov. Chris Christie ordered the state Department of Transportation to delay hundreds of state-funded transportation projects in an effort to conserve what little funds remain for emergency repairs.
Lawmakers were unable to agree on a plan to raise the gas tax to replenish the fund.
