New Jersey motorists looking to get the 411 on traffic throughout the state can now start calling 511.
The Department of Transportation has been testing out the new system that provides up-to-the-minute information about crashes, construction delays and other incidents. The system, which will monitor 100 Garden State roadways, is federally funded, so there is no cost to taxpayers or those dialing the number.
So far, the DOT says it has received 6,000 calls per month. The system has experienced some bumps along the way, but the DOT expects those kinks to be worked out when the system officially launches in the spring.
The DOT says those who want to use a cell phone while driving should be using a hands-free headset or speaker phone when calling the number.
New Jersey will become the 37th state to launch the program. The FCC has set aside 511 as the national number for traffic information.
