NJ lawmaker introduces bill to prevent use of e-cigs among teens
One Garden State legislator is hoping to stop the use of electric cigarettes among minors.
Even though New Jersey law requires residents to be 21 or over to buy e-cigarettes, the Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) says the trend is growing among teenagers.
Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce, a Republican of the 26th District, is dropping a new bill that would make it illegal for anyone under 21 to possess any electronic smoking device.
"I started looking at some of the instruments that are there and the ones that look like USBs--if they're in a kid's bookbag, a parent isn't even going to know," DeCroce said.
DeCroce says she doesn't want to wait 20 years to find teenagers dying from the results of vaping.
Mark Awad, owner of Vape Beast, is in favor of the bill and says that minors should not be using any electronic smoking devices.
"Children should not have their hands on it," Awad said. "It dangerous for them. They don't know the types of chemicals that they're looking at or anything about nicotine, especilly the battery control on vaporizers."
Under the new legislation, those caught with the new illegal devices will face a $25 fine. DeCroce said she originally introduced the bill as a $500 fine but faced pushback from other legislators.
