A state senator is facing death threats over her plan to introduce a bill to purge trans fats from New Jersey restaurants.
Senator Ellen Karcher (D-12th District) says she has received about 60 calls from angry taxpayers. According to the lawmaker, some people said she should be pushed off a bridge or stabbed. State police were called to her office Saturday to escort her and her staff out of the building. Authorities are investigating the threats.
Karcher wants to eliminate unhealthy trans fats from restaurants, which New York City officials are also considering. Karcher, who is a vegetarian, says her decision is about public health, not personal choice. She still plans to introduce her bill on Thursday.
