New Jersey has joined a coalition of Democratic-led states that are suing the Trump administration over a program the group says slashes billions of dollars geared to making energy bills more affordable.
New Jersey officials say this includes two grants in the state that could provide billions of dollars in energy savings over several years.
The lawsuit states that slashing the funds that were already approved by Congress is illegal.
"Let me be clear: I will do everything in my power to drive down energy costs and make life more affordable for all New Jerseyans. But the Trump Administration is doing exactly the opposite, going out of its way to unlawfully gut programs that support affordable, clean energy—all in the name of seeking retribution against the President's perceived political opponents,” acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport wrote in a statement.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill has cited lowering utility costs as a priority of her administration.
