New Jersey immigrants marched Tuesday to get the attention of Congress in hopes that legislators will not raise citizenships fees.
Congress proposes to raise the price for a family of four to become American citizens by about 80 percent. The cost would increase from $1,400 to about $2,500.
Government officials say they want to increase the citizenship cost to hire more staffers, upgrade equipment and make the system more efficient.
ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, gathered at Riverview Fisk Park in Jersey City and marched to Union City. ACORN members said the group is rallying nationwide to send a message to the federal government. They say the fee increase will make it more difficult for immigrants to bring family members to the United States.
