Rep. Josh Gottheimer unveiled his new bill calling for safer school buses, two weeks after a deadly school bus crash in Morris County.

Gottheimer’s bill, dubbed “Secure Every Child Under the Right Equipment Standards (SECURES), requires all school buses to have three-point lap and shoulder seat belts. It also asks federal transportation officials to make sure all drivers are qualified to drive children.

The announcement comes after a student and teacher from East Brook Middle School in Paramus were killed in a crash while on their way to a class field trip. Over 40 others were injured.

The bus driver, 77-year-old Hudy Muldrow, is now facing reckless vehicular homicide charges. Prosecutors say that traffic cameras show that Muldrow tried to make an illegal U-turn on Interstate 80 just before the bus was struck by a dump truck.

Records show that Muldrow’s license was suspended 14 times in the past. The Paramus superintendent says that Muldrow’s record wasn't flagged during a background check.
