Newark Mayor Ras Baraka is set to host a town hall meeting so that the city’s residents can ask questions about the ongoing lead water crisis.

The event will be held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center next month. Baraka says that his residents have been asking to hear from him about the issues.

“Ultimately people in the community are like, ‘I don’t want to hear from the news or a robocall. I want to hear your voice and hear you say the things you’re going to say.’ That’s the purpose of having it, so people can hear it from me,” Baraka says.

Water tests recently conducted show that the water filters used by the city are reliable and are keeping lead levels in the water down.

The city is also in the process of replacing all lead service lines – at no cost to residents. The mayor says that nearly 1,000 lines have been replaced so far.

The town hall will be Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. Newark residents will be able to submit questions at the city’s website.
