Newark police officials found a special way to honor the memory of a woman who lost her battle with brain cancer last month.

Marilyn Rodriguez, 43, had an affinity for the city's police mounted unit. Her dying wish was to see the horses. Sadly, the day never happened.

"She would always stand close to the sidewalk hoping maybe one would come closer by, hoping to touch one, but she never got the opportunity," says Kenia Guzman, Rodriguez's sister.

Newark police didn't want Rodriguez's admiration for the four-legged officers to be forgotten.

"Commander was actually the horse that would go by Marylin's house everyday, and this was the horse she would look for to wave to and that brought her such joy," says Newark Police Commanding Lt. Christopher Gialanella.

Newark police presented a horseshoe to Rodriguez's family that belonged to her favorite horse, along with a special plaque. Her family says it's a fitting tribute for a woman whose illness didn't stop her from living live to the fullest.

Rodriguez's family was also presented with a Newark police patch in Marilyn's honor.
